Meet The Camp Guy
|
I'm the Camp Guy, but my real name is Benjamin C. Barnett. A big part of why I was inspired
to start this company is because I love working with kids, I'm passionate about sports and I think sports camps are a great venue for teachers and coaches to help mold tomorrow's leaders. My company, SportsCamper.com, is here to help bring the country's best coaches and camps together with the youth athletes who are eager to improve themselves as athletes and people. When I was young, I always felt as if there should be a resource for all the camps in America. Well, now there is one. SportsCamper.com!! If you'd like more info about SportsCamper, go to the About SportsCamper page or our
FAQ page or
contact me at campguy@sportscamper.com.

"When I was 5 years old I started sleeping with my football every night, when I
turned 8, my basketball joined us."

For now, I want to help you get to know me better. So here's a run-down of my life. I was born in Abington, PA on July 9th, 1979, and grew up just outside of Philadelphia. When I was 5 years old I started sleeping with my football every night, when I turned 8, my basketball joined us. I bet you think I'm kidding, but I'm not. I used to shoot hoops in my driveway until 1am, in January! I idolized Joe Montana, Charles Barkely, Michael Jordan, Randall Cunningham, John Elway and Jerry Rice.

When I was 13, I moved to Toronto, Ontario (that's in Canada for those of you keeping score at home), and lived there until I was 16. While I was there, I learned the finer points of hockey, and had several friends who made it their mission to teach me the art of curling, which is essentially shuffleboard on ice.

Before my Junior year of high school, I moved back to the Philadelphia area. By the end of my senior year of high school I had played baseball, basketball, football, track, cross country, wrestling, swimming and hockey. Competitive sports were my life, but I was also an honors student and a member of several volunteer clubs, student government, etc. I tell you this because I don't want you to get the impression that I was just a "jock". :)

After high school, I had the opportunity to continue my academic and athletic career at Yale University. There I played quarterback and receiver on the football team, and I majored in Political Science (so if you feel like discussing the merits of W's presidency, count me in). My four years at Yale were part of what inspired me to start this company. As a camp counselor at several sports camps and clinics near Yale, I worked with many young athletes--most of whom came from low-income, low-opportunity families. I became inspired to make sure that all kids had the same athletic opportunities that I had (See the Camp Scholarships page).

SportsCamper.com is alive and well, ready to help America find the best sports camps around. Feel free to write me with any questions about sports, camps, nutrition, weight training or if you just feel like talking. In the meantime, check out these pictures of my family, friends and teammates.....

My football days at Yale. I came in as quarterback, but saw most of my time at receiver. |

This is my family in July, 1998. We're close, we'd never turn our backs on each other; A camera maybe, but not each other... |
| |
Some of my favorite sports experiences have been as a coach and mentor. Here I am with the first team I ever coached. |

A lot of sports is about the competition and respect gained from the people around
you. I was lucky enough to have a lot of good athletes as friends. Don't kid yourself
if you think this crew doesn't look so tough. There are a couple of Division I athletes
in there. |
